    Authentic. Worth Buying!
Originally premiering on the Hallmark Channel, this film was amazingly authentic. Acting was excellent, sets costumes and scenery true to the time in history in which the story takes place. No powdered soap flakes or foam here! Again, the outdoor scenes took place in the dead of winter. The story of a widowed young mother working hard to keep a home for her three children, with the eldest daughter teeming with literary aspirations, hoping one day to become a writer. When not working outside the home to help the family survive, her time is spent creating stories. Because her family is struggling, she writes a wild tale about the family’s difficulties and send it to her wealthy, yet estranged grandmother in the hope of receiving monetary help in time for Thanksgiving. Does the scheme of the young devotee of Lord Byron succeed? Purchase this wonderful video and find out for yourself!😉

A Heartwarming Family Drama with a Unique Ending!
An Old-Fashioned Thanksgiving is a heartwarming family drama filled with characters who really add to the story line and show what matters in the end. It is best to go into this movie knowing very little about it so the plot evolves as your understanding of each personality grows. There is a little romance in this movie, but the focus is more on survival during cold weather when illness strikes. One of the things in this movie that makes you think twice is Tilly praying to a statue. Of course she learns quickly that this is not something that works when her prayer is not answered. Later in the movie she prays to God and her prayer is answered! So there is that! This movie is made for TV but feels more emotional and filled with love than most regular movies. I started off thinking I wasn’t going to enjoy it, but as the story progressed I got more and more invested in the characters lives and I loved the unique ending!Well worth watching Thanksgiving week! Add this to your holiday collection! :)~The Rebecca Review

Destined to become a holiday favorite.
This movie is rich with nuanced performances by all three of the main actresses – Jacqueline Bisset, Helene Joy and Tatiana Maslany. At the heart of this story is love’s redemptive quality which brings about forgiveness, healing and family unity.A widow (Helene Joy) with three children is struggling to survive on a farm she rents from a well-to-do family. The season is Thanksgiving and it appears that she cannot afford the food to enjoy the annual feast. The eldest daughter, Tilly (Tatiana Maslany), is writing a family story and wishes for her mother, Mary, to be reunited with her grandmother, Isabella (Jacqueline Bisset). The two have been estranged since her mother married her father, a man whom her grandmother felt was beneath her.Tilly pens a letter to her grandmother in an effort to get Isabella to come for a visit. Isabella decides to accept the invitation and this is where the story takes off. Mary, of course, is unhappy with Isabella’s unexpected appearance and is averse to anything she tries to do for the family. In particular, she resents the relationship that begins to develop between Isabella and Tilly. It appears that Isabella is trying to do for Mary what she did not succeed in doing for her daughter and the last thing Mary wants is for Tilly to be influenced in her view of life by Isabella’s social standing. As events unfold, Isabella’s past is revealed and it becomes apparent what is at the heart of the estrangement, which goes beyond just Isabella’s disapproval of the man Mary chose to marry. In a selfless act, Mary endangers herself which frustrates Isabella but impresses Tilly. The dire consequence ends up being a blessing in disguise as it brings about reconciliation that changes Isabella the most. The movie ends with Tilly giving her mother a book she has been writing all throughout this holiday season. In its opening paragraph she says: “The best adventures begin with simple things. Hope and family and love.” Those three things are exactly what this story is about – hope, family and love. This film is destined to become a holiday favorite, so add it to your collection this season.

3 female stars make this a true Masterpiece
3 women, 3 generations, and the 3 actresses excel in what is already a good adaptation of a famous author’s work. It’s not “Little Women” by L.M.Alcott, but you get a lot of the feel of that book as well. There is confrontation between all generations, and love as well. It takes struggle, and a Thanksgiving climax, to bring it all together into the homey cozy ending that all love.My favorite was actually the middle generation, Mary (Helene Joy) who I first encountered over several years playing a similar roll, only in “Murdoch Mysteries” she is a full fledged doctor, and does the nasty autopsy work for solving crimes. In the Thanksgiving film, she’s healing when the real doctor is unavailable. In both roles, she plays the tough gal, but with a secret softer heart. You must see those Murdoch Mysteries, also period drama.Daughter Matilda is played by Tatiana Maslany who does a remarkable job with the role, although not a novice in film. 2 years later she steps up to play Mary in “The Nativity”, another film worth your while. Of course the intended lead was rich Granny Isabella, played by Jacqueline Bisset. She’s nasty and then turns sweet. She is grande, and her costumes even grander, she being the richest person of the characters. She got all the fanciest frocks. The rest of the period costumes and sets and props were expertly done making this quite an enjoyable and nostalgic romp back into the past.A fun family film, good for all ages, and stunning camera vistas. Some ‘making of’ bonus was fun to watch also.SUBTITLES & CC ARE PROVIDED FOR THOSE WHO NEED THEM.Now I wait for Hallmark Channel’s “An Old Fashioned Christmas” staring Billet again as Isabella and Catherine Steadman as the granddaughter. Where’s that DVD, I query?

Great purchase! The shipping took a little while but the DVD was in perfect condition. The story is wonderfully old-fashioned and clean. But I would not recommend to get the second movie called “ an old-fashioned Christmas“. The first one is just cute and well done the second one was taken over by Hallmark and therefore is like any other movie they make, quite cheesy!

This was a heart warming and touching DVD. It demonstrates that we are not an island but need family and friends to get by in life.It is encouraging to see how the grandmother’s heart is softened, how the mother must forgive in order to be free and how the young daughter, even though instrumental in bringing this all about, needed her own life changing experience as well.Nice, clean, family movie.
