Customers say

Customers like the appearance and value of the camera lens. For example, they mention it takes clear and sharp pictures in brilliant color, and it makes the camera look really cool. That said, they are happy with the quality, and build quality. Opinions are mixed on zoom, performance, ease of use, and telephoto.

    adds addtional features to TG-5
This bundle comes with adapter ring and lens. The lens is solid and has caps on each end to protect it when not in use. The adapter ring also comes with another lens cap which is nice, as the camera itself did not come with a lens cap. I just swapped the ring that came with the camera for this adapter ring. I was able to attach my diving filter to the adapter ring which I had previously purchased for my older Olympus Stylus underwater housing. Overall happy with purchase. Photos show 1) normal 2)camera’s built in zoom, and 3) with telephoto lens.

    Works as expected
Others have noted that it doesn’t work well without being zoomed in most of the way. Knowing this going in, it works perfectly well for my needs, and seems to produce great images. At close range, I don’t want the extra zoom anyway, and it’s a very quick operation to remove or add the lens.

    Tele-converter not telephoto
There seems to be some confusion about this lens. It is a teleconverter. That is it fits over the existing lens and converts it to a longer focal length. It is not a zoom lens. If the camera is not zoomed out fully it will vignette. The TG-6 has settings for accessories. When the teleconverter accessory is selected, the camera automatically zooms out. In 35mm equivalents this gives you a 170mm focal length vs the 100mm focal length of the camera alone.Does it work. Yes. It is reasonably sharp. The depth of field requires a little finesse. Focus midway into the shot and hold the shutter half way down. Reframe the shot and take the picture. If you focus on the background, the foreground may be less sharp than you would like. It takes a little getting used to.Not the easiest accessory to carry in your pocket. I have a pouch to neatly hold the camera, but has no room for this lens. If you want to take it hiking etc. you will need something else to carry it. Maybe not worth the trouble.I use DXO Photolab to process raw images. It has a profile for the TG-6, but not for this lens. This means that I have to do my own sharpening and lens corrections. That’s OK, but not optimal.By the way, you get a 40.5mm adapter ring with the lens. Can be used by itself to mount filters. The lens mount is not waterproof, but the lens and camera are. Used underwater there will be water between the lens and the camera. It will do no harm. I just wouldn’t use it underwater anyway. It is a worthwhile accessory, but not as useful as I hoped.

It isn’t a zoom and you get just a little more telephoto.
So I returned this item as I also returned the camera, but I played with it for a bit and it was a total pain in the butt. What I would say, is it gives you a little telephoto option that you would otherwise not have. The question I would ask is it enough to justify the hassle or price? The olympus already has a a bit of soon option, so you gain a little when you strap this baby on.I found it clumsy at best and you have to zoom in the camera in order for it to work. If you take it off, your camera is zoomed in as much as possible. So, as long as you understand that and you feel you need more than the camera offers and you can setup your shots, then you should buy it.IMHO, I rarely get to setup my shots, nor do I want the extra thing to carry, nor did I find the quality of the picture was worth all that.

Super clear lens and photos come out great
Very well made lens, fits perfectly on my camera. Adapter is plastic, but its well made too. Gave my TG-2 a little more zoom power. Definatly the toughest lens I’ve ever had. Super clear lens and photos come out great. Good stuff.

Does very little to improve the camera, not a true zoom
Disappointing. Wish Nikon still made the 300W waterproof with 7x zoom

This lens is not even vaguely watertight on the camera … and it’s not supposed to be
This lens is not even vaguely watertight on the camera. The mount snaps into place but rattles loosely and sure enough water gets in between the fixed camera lens and the teleconverter. The annoyance of the special setting and the fact it has to be reset to zoomed out every time are major, but the fact that it leaked in one foot of swimming pool water makes it a loser. Or am I missing an O-ring? And no case? Since when does a camera product come for Japan with no case. You have to take this lens off to do most of what the camera is good at, and then there’s no place to put it. I can’t believe this is an Olympus product. EDIT: So a frustrating week later, I final wrote to Olympus and they tell me the teleconverter and filters are “wet” accessories, meant to fill with water. Oh. Gee. Why didn’t I find that critical bit of information in the promotional, packaging, boxed instructions, web reviews and user comments or Point-of-Sale information? OK. I’ll let the spaces in front of and behind the teleconverter fill, but it still creeps me out to let unfiltered salt water into camera equipment. Maybe some comforting reassurance should be prominently explained to buyers and users. Like it’s a feature, not a bug. Since I’ll be using it for swimming, snorkeling, and surfing, I’m curious if it will keep draining. The only thing I think of that’s worse than seeing sea water inside a lens is half a lens-full, we’ll see how the pictures come out and how the lenses and filters clean up and last.

    Easy to use
This lens is just what I needed to get that extra close shot with my TG-2 camera. Simple to attach to the camera and then the camera has the settings to make that close up shot look great! I would recomend this lens & or camera as well As both to anyone thats on the go out in the eliments on a hiking or camping trip, or on the go with the kids on the baseball field. This is truly a great set up without the worry of the water, dust or an occasional drop leaving you without a camera. The TG series is truly a “TOUGH” Camera and this lens looks to be as tough as the Camera is!

This lens makes me feel like a pro, even with my beat-up TG-3. It’s very rugged and so far the glass is holding up well to cleaning with a microfibre cloth.I know it’s rugged because I fell on it (in my cargo pocket against my thigh) while skiing. It left a big bruise on my leg but absolutely no damage to the lens or the adapter ring.Be aware that (as previous reviewers have said) that this is a teleconverter, not a telephoto lens. Its length is fixed, and can only be adjusted with the camera’s internal optical zoom. Also, as others have warned, when shooting at wider lengths there is considerable vignetting. One more thing: if buying with the red adapter ring, be aware that it is plastic. I understand the logic: if I fell on it any harder I would want the ring to fail rather than have the camera body or the lens threads to fail.

Mediocre lens. Didn’t add much to the original functionality of the TG6 at all. Regret buying this.
