Consider this College Health 101—an award-winning guide to what students really want (or need) to know about their mental and physical health when they’re away from home.
College students facing their first illness, accident, or anxiety away from home often flip-flop between wanting to handle it themselves and wishing their parents could swoop in and fix everything. Advice from peers and “Dr. Google” can be questionable. The Ultimate College Student Health Handbook provides accurate, trustworthy, evidence-based medical information (served with a dose of humor) to reduce anxiety and stress and help set appropriate expectations for more than fifty common issues.
What if you can’t sleep well (or can’t sleep at all) in your dorm room? What if a pill “gets stuck” in your throat? What if your roommate falls asleep (or passes out) wearing contacts, and wakes up with one painfully stuck? Your friend’s terrible sore throat isn’t Strep or Mono? What else could it be? What should you do for food poisoning? When do you really need X-rays for a sprained ankle or injured toe? What helps severe test anxiety or fear of public speaking?
Dr. Jill Grimes has the answer to these questions and many more. Her guidebook is designed to help you: Decide if and when to seek medical help Know what to expect when you get there Plan for the worst-case scenario if you don’t seek help Learn how you can prevent this in the future Realize what you can do right now, before you see a doctor Understand the diagnostic and treatment options
Got questions about tattoos, smoking, vaping, pot, and piercings? No worries, Dr. Grimes has covered those topics, too, as well as a few things you might not know about the use and abuse of stimulant (ADHD) prescription medications.
Pair this book with the DIY First Aid Kit detailed in the bonus section to help you, your roommates, and your friends have a healthier, happier semester!

Excellent resource!
This is the perfect gift for a high school graduation! I spent hours reading reviews of graduation type books & none were quite right. This one is full of up to date information, easy to understand, meets kids where they are. I gave the earlier edition as a gift last year & asked the student if she found it useful. She said she used it to look things up as needed but also just read sections she found interesting. This year I bought several as my go-to gift. It includes suggested ingredients for a first aid kit that can be paired as a bigger gift. I bought a tool box & filled it up with the items Dr. Grimes recommends. No matter how savvy kids are, the transition to independence can challenge them. This book will help guide them.

The perfect graduation gift!
This is a well-curated reference for common ailments and questions a college student might face, in a highly readable format with a helpful index in the back. I paired this book with a small first aid kit as a gift for my daughter and all her friends for high school graduation. They loved it! As a medical professional, I found the information accurate and concise, and my daughter agrees that the updated topics are highly relevant to anyone going out on their own for the first time. I’m so glad I came across this book!

Won’t know you need it until you need it! Great grad gift
I had purchased the first edition for a family grad – it was extremely useful – and so I am buying another one for another graduate heading off to college. This second edition has some excellent updates. I love the first aid kit list at the end. Clearly written yet conveys the most important points of very common ailments. Indexed by body part up front so it’s easy to navigate. A first aid kit along with this book is a terrific gift combo for a new grad or anyone else heading out to live on their own for the first time.

College students NEED this book!
As an experienced (aka âoldâ) pediatrician and a mother of teen and adult children, I cannot praise this book highly enough!! College freshmen are naturally overwhelmed with their ânew normalâ of living independently and tackling challenging courses, all while figuring out their life goals and navigating new relationships. Carefully designed to be accessible and informative without being condescending, this book not only answers their questions but empowers them to take the reins of their own health care. In short, it is the gift that every parent wants their young adult to receive. We all owe a debt of gratitude to Dr. Jill Grimes (and Nicole Grimes -illustrator) for creating this masterpiece.

A must-have for high school grads and college-aged young adults!
Dr. Jill Grimes has done it again! In this third edition of “The Ultimate College Student Health Handbook,” Grimes provides a wealth of information about some of the most common (and not so common) ailments and questions that college kids (and their parents) have. She knows when to calm you down, and when to sound the alarm (but also to calm your nerves) for anything from headaches to muscle aches and so much more. This is the perfect gift for new or soon-to-be high school graduates, and any young adult who’s away from home (even if not in college) for the first time. While there is great info online, this book is the real deal, filters out the internet noise, and gives terrific, sound advice from a great doctor, mom, and writer.
